Sayyed Nasrallah Calls for Massive Rally Monday

Mohamad Shmaysani Readers Number : 279

28/12/2008 Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah called for a massive gathering in Beirut’s southern suburb to denounce the Israeli aggression on Gaza and to express solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Sayyed Nasrallah was speaking through a large screen as he marked the first night of Ashoura at the Sayyed Shouhadaa complex in Dahiyeh.
His eminence addressed the situation in Gaza and expressed deep regret at the Arab collusion “that is similar to the Arab collusion during the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon.”
“It is truly unfortunate to begin our Hijri new Year and Gregorian new year with a serious humanitarian calamity that has so far taken the lives of three hundred Palestinians in the besieged, oppressed yet resistant and steadfast Gaza Strip. Today, we might not need to speak about the notion as we are witnessing the model of a new Karbala. What is taking place today helps us more to understand history. Karbala’s reality is that a few believers had refused humiliation and yielding to tyrants. Those believers were to choose between humiliation and disproportionate confrontation that may lead to martyrdom, so they chose martyrdom. Imam Hussein peace be upon him created this model and said his famous words: We shall never be disgraced. It was not a matter of emotions, it was rather a matter of humanitarian and ideological commitment. This is the school of Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him in Karbala,” Sayyed Nasrallah explained.

His eminence went on saying that this was the choice in Karbala “and this was the choice during the July 2006 war.” He told the resistance community in Lebanon that “when you were to choose between surrender and confrontation, you chose to stand up, thus refusing disgrace regardless of the tens of thousands of homes destroyed and the hundreds of martyrs and injured. You stood up against collusion, betrayal and disgrace and this is how blood conquered the sword.”

The Hezbollah chief underlined that what is taking place in Gaza today was identical to what had taken place in Lebanon during the 2006 war. “It’s the same choices, the same collusion and inevitably the same consequence,” he said predicting victory in the end.
“When the legitimate Prime Minister Ismail Haniyyeh come out from under the rubble and fire to say ‘we will not surrender and we will preserve our dignity…this is Karbala.”
Sayyed Nasrallah openly spoke about the ongoing confrontation in Gaza. “Allow me to dot the i's and cross the t's, because we’re in dire need for the nation to shoulder its responsibility. What is taking place today in Gaza is similar to what had taken place in Lebanon; there is a US-Israeli scheme in the region and they want to impose humiliating conditions on the Palestinians, Lebanon and Syria after Egypt and Jordan made so called peace agreements with Israel. They are working on imposing these conditions by force, pressure, isolation, internal sedition, media and psychological wars, assassinations and wars. For them, it is essential to yield those who have not yet yielded t the US-Israeli scheme.”

His eminence stressed some Arab regimes are partners in the scheme. “It is not true that there is Arab silence; there is real and complete partnership in this particularly the sides that signed agreements with Israel. They are working today on preparing the circumstances for the surrender of the resistance engaged in the Arab-Israeli conflict.”

The Hezbollah chief revealed that the war of 2006 was waged with Arab consent and request. “The Israelis were crystal clear when they revealed this and those Arab regimes cannot deny this because the Israelis might possess evidence on their collusion. This is what is happening today in Gaza. Not only those same Arab regimes are demanding Israel cuts the heads of the resistance forces, in fact they are helping the Zionist entity on this. We have heard from Israel that the magnitude of the Arab support to the war on Gaza well exceeds their support to the Israeli war on Lebanon in 2006.”

Sayyed Nasrallah also attributed the internal division in Palestine to the same Arab regimes that want division to become internal strife.
He set as example the notorious decisions taken by the previous government in Lebanon against Hezbollah and a senior Muslim Shiite officer managing security at the airport on the fifth of May 2008 and which nearly dragged the country into civil war. “The previous government wouldn’t have taken those decisions on the fifth of May if it weren’t for the support of these Arab regimes. They don not feel embarrassed; they are convinced and committed to the scheme.”
His eminence added that “even on the political and media levels, no one is asking Arab regimes to open its fronts and fight, but the least they could do is to take a fair stance by not holding the victim responsible.”
“We have heard an Egyptian official blaming Hamas for the attack on Gaza. Can anyone believe that this is the position of an Arab official who said during the blockade of Gaza: ‘We’ll break the feet of anyone who will set foot in Egypt? Is this the stance of an Egyptian official in the wake of the slaughter of more than 300 Palestinians in a short period of time?”
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned Hamas that Israel’s attack will not stop unless the resistance group stops firing rockets at occupied territories.

“Today we are hearing the same positions we heard in 2006 in terms of shouldering the resistance with the responsibility of breaking the war; this is shameful. Some Arab media outlets which should be called “Israeli media outlets” are dealing with the developments in Gaza as if the 300 martyrs were killed in a road accident; they broadcast the news and go back to regular programs as nothing is happening and the worst is that they insist on not calling those killed martyrs.”

Sayyed Nasrallah said that the Gazans have made their choice and they are practicing it through martyrdom and resistance, “just as you did in 2006; nothing stopped you from clinging to your rights and to the resistance.”
“What is the nation’s responsibility today? To triumph, the central objective is to work on stopping the aggression against Gaza and preventing the Israelis from achieving their goals. Arab peoples should press their governments to take action even if this leads to face their regimes with their chests. Those who would fall will definitely be martyrs on the road to Quds. Arab governments should not take weakness as a pretext not to act and Arab people should not take their government’s suppression as a pretext not to take action.
In our present time, the US is in a financial crisis and we have oil, money and political stature and our governments can stop the Israeli aggression with a humble effort. The Egyptian stand is the cornerstone. No one is asking it to open a front; we are asking it to open the Rafah crossing for the living, for food, for water and even for arms. In the war of 2006, Syria did not close its border with Lebanon despite the continuous bombing of the border. Egypt is is the “Mother of the World”; it is not the ‘Red Crescent’ to deal with Gaza like this. Egypt is requested not to exploit the war to pressure Hamas to yield to Israel’s conditions. If Egypt did not open the Rafah crossing to Gaza, he added, it would be considered an accomplice in the killing of Palestinians and they (Egyptian officials) should know that they will be in the circle of condemnation if they do not rush to take an honorable stance.”

The leader of the resistance urged the pride and noble people of Egypt “who we know what really lies in their hearts to take to the streets. If the people took to the streets by the millions, could the police kill millions of Egyptians? People of Egypt, you must open this crossing by the force of your chests," he said. “We know that Egyptian officers and soldiers adhere to their authentic Arab identity. I am not calling for a coup in Egypt, but those officers should tell their government that they are not with watching the Palestinian people being slaughtered while they guard Israel’s border. No one is justified today; the Egyptian stand can change the situation. If Gaza was steadfast for a few days or weeks, the aggression will eventually end because the Israeli enemy cannot tolerate war of attrition and will be forced to stop and abandon its goals.”

Sayyed Nasrallah criticized the sides that are calling for a fair and comprehensive peace with Israel. “I ask them: what has Israel given you except for more humiliation and more conditions? The Palestinians did not gain from Camp David the least rights to save face. It is really silly to believe that the international community will protect us through international resolutions, none of which was implemented by Israel. You say that Arab solidarity will protect us? Where is this Arab solidarity and they could not agree on a summit to address the situation in Gaza because of (Egyptian) reservations? What really protects our peoples and gains back our rights is the sincere resistance and everything else is mere illusion.”

As for Lebanon, Sayyed Nasrallah continued, “since the aggression on Gaza began, Barak, Livni and Olmert have been sending warnings to Lebanon and the Israeli army has been stepping up measures on the border and calling on settlers in the north to prepare their shelters. Hearing this, there are two options: the first is that everything the Israelis are saying and doing is in the framework of a pre-emptive measure; and the second is that they are planning for something. We should be aware that this bad timing amid Arab collusion, international void, economic crisis and US political vacuum between Bush and Obama, might allure Israel to take a certain action against Lebanon especially that they need to make such move for political and electoral gains.
This requires Lebanon to be cautious and not to underestimate what it happening around it. For instance, who placed the eight rockets discovered lately in the south? Some politicians in Lebanon have been pointing their fingers at us. But I tell them that Hezbollah has enough courage to take responsibility for any action it takes. On the other hand, isn’t it true that Israel has the capacity to infiltrate into Lebanon and plant these rockets, or maybe use its agents in Lebanon to do this job so that the Zionist entity would be justified to attack Lebanon? Unfortunately, some Lebanese politicians are giving Israel this pretext through their silly statements.
I have asked the brothers in the resistance in the south specifically to be present, on alert and cautious because we are facing a criminal enemy and we don't know the magnitude of the conspiracies being weaved around us."

Sayyed Nasrallah concluded his speech by calling on the Lebanese, Arabs and Muslims to act responsibly at this stage and exert every effort to stop the aggression on Gaza.
“Imam Sayyed Khamenei has called for mourning on Monday. We are concerned in this. For my part, I invite you to gather tomorrow at 1500 (local time) at the Raya field, men and women, young and old, to consolidate with Gaza and the martyrs. We have to make the whole hear our voice and see our fists rising. Tomorrow is Ashoura as well because every day is Ashoura and every land in Karbala.”

Hezbollah fighters placed on alert

Nasrallah said Israel was either taking precautionary measures or preparing for an attack [AFP]

Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary-general of Hezbollah, has told his fighters to be on alert for any possible Israeli attack on Lebanon following raids on Gaza that have killed nearly 300 Palestinians.

Nasrallah told a gathering in Beirut's southern suburbs that the Israeli assault on Gaza was a carbon copy of its attacks on Lebanon during a 34-day war with Hezbollah in 2006.

About 1,200 people died in Lebanon and 158 in Israel in that conflict.

"I have asked the brothers in the resistance in the south specifically to be present, on alert and cautious because we are facing a criminal enemy and we don't know the magnitude of the conspiracies," Nasrallah said.

Speaking via video link for security reasons, Nasrallah said Israeli forces had gone on alert along the border with Lebanon since Saturday when the attack on Gaza began.

He said the Israelis were either taking precautionary measures or preparing for an attack in an attempt to avenge its failure to destroy Hezbollah in 2006.

"We are ready to face any aggression on our land, our country or our dignity," he said.

'Blunt truth'

"We will tell the world we are here, and terrorism and killing cannot intimidate us."

Hassan Nasrallah
Hezbollah leader

Rula Amin, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Lebanon, said Nasrallah wanted to talk to the Arab people "bluntly and truthfully".

"He said this attack by Israel is part of a larger US-Israeli plan to weaken Hamas, to impose upon the Palestinians and on Hamas to surrender and accept a settlement plan on Israeli terms.

"The harshest words he had were for the Arab regimes. He said some were 'partners in this plot'.

"He quoted Israeli officials saying that the support they were receiving from Arab countries to continue their attacks on Gaza was even stronger than the support received during the time when they were attacking Hezbollah in 2006.

"What he says echoes the sentiments on the Arab street. Today in Beirut, many of the harsh words were not only against Israel, but against Arab governments, who they say have been silent, standing by, and according to some protesters, taking part."

Call to Egyptians

Nasrallah urged Egyptians in their "millions" to take to the streets to force their government to open the country's border with Gaza, where Israel is conducting deadly air raids against Palestinians.

"If the Egyptian people took to the streets by the millions, could the police kill millions of Egyptians?

"People of Egypt, you must open this border by the force of your chests," he said.

The Hezbollah chief also called for a mass rally to be held in his movement's bastion in the Shia southern suburbs of Beirut on Monday in solidarity with the people of Gaza.

"We will tell the world we are here, and terrorism and killing cannot intimidate us," he said.

To neviens negrib ne zināt, ne atcerēties.

LETA

28. decembris (2008)
12:30

Vardarbības saasināšanās Gazas joslā apdraud Tuvo Austrumu miera procesa sarunas, informēja ārlietu ministrs Māris Riekstiņš (TP).

Viņš pauž nopietnu satraukumu par vardarbības saasināšanos Gazas joslā pēdējo dienu laikā, kas radījusi lielu civiliedzīvotāju upuru skaitu.

Ministrs izsaka nosodījumu jebkurai militāra un neproporcionāla spēka pielietošanai šīs krīzes risinājumam gan raķešu izšaušanai no Gazas teritorijas Izraēlas virzienā, gan Izraēlas uzlidojumiem Gazas joslā, kā arī radītajai liela mēroga civilajai krīzei.

"Latvija atbalsta starptautiskās sabiedrības izteiktos aicinājumus pusēm nekavējoties pārtraukt vardarbību Gazas joslā un atgriezties pie sarunu galda, kā arī nodrošināt humanitārās palīdzības sniegšanas iespējas civiliedzīvotājiem. Šādi militārie konflikti apdraud Tuvo Austrumu miera procesa tālāku virzību un stabilitāti visā reģionā," uzsver Riekstiņš.

Savukārt Izraēlas Ārlietu ministrijas paziņojumā, ko izplatījusi Latvijas vēstniecība Izraēlā, teikts, ka Izraēlas iedzīvotāji jau gadiem atrodas ikdienas uzbrukumu draudos no Gazas joslas.

A senior IDF officer noted: "The Qassam cannot be further upgraded, and the Palestinians need a new weapon...The cells have traveled abroad to learn about the Katyusha rocket and how to manufacture it back in the Gaza Strip."

Quds(Grad/Katyusha)
Palestinian Islamic Jihad(PIJ) claimed it had developed a lethal long-range rocket capable of striking central Ashkelon. According to PIJ sources, the rocket has a range of 13-16 kilometers(approximately 8-10 miles) and a payload that includes TNT. Spokesman Abu Hamza noted that PIJ was finally able to produce the new Quds rocket -- an improved version of the Quds 101 rocket. According to Hamza, the new Quds rocket is 2.3 meters long(approximately 7 feet) and has been successfully tested.
Media reports indicated that Palestinian terrorists were manufacturing the Quds-3 along with a multiple-rocket launcher system. The Quds-3, developed in the Gaza Strip with the aid of PA funding and Iranian operatives, is based on the Russian Grad and BM21 Katyusha. The Quds-3 was test-fired against Ashkelon on March 28 and weighs 66 kilos. The rocket carries an explosive payload of 17 kilograms.

The 122mm launcher fires 10 rockets simultaneously to a distance of 18-30 kilometers. The system, capable of firing 40 rockets within 20 seconds, weighs 13 tons and enables Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to strike Ashkelon, Ashdod, Netivot and Ofakim. The rockets are launched by a crew that pulls back approximately 60 meters from the launcher and releases the rockets by pulling a wire.

Gaza Facing Genocide: At Least 270 Martyrs

Mohamad Shmaysani Readers Number : 205

28/12/2008 Israel continued its bloody offensive against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip for the second successive day on Sunday, the worst since 1948, rising the number of martyrs so far to more than 270 people and the number of injured to well over 700. The death toll is likely to increase dramatically given the number of serious injuries and the lack of medicaments and first aid means. "Palestine has never seen an uglier massacre," said Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh. In Damascus, Hamas Politburo Chief Khaled Meshaal called for a third Palestinian Intifada against Israel. Hamas has vowed revenge including martyrdom operations deep inside the Zionist entity.

BARAK WILLIING TO EXPAND OPERATION; CALLS IN THOUSANDS OF RESERVISTS
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Sunday that his forces could launch a ground operation in the Strip as part of the offensive dubbed 'Operation Cast Lead'. "We are ready for anything. If it's necessary to deploy ground forces to defend our citizens, we will do so," Barak's spokesman quoted him as saying.
An Israeli government official said the Israeli army has called in thousands of reservists including combat units and home front units.

HAMAS: EGYPTIAN LEADERS DECEIVED US
The Palestinian and Arab public opinion expressed deep disappointment over the failure of the Arab and Islamic governments to exert pressure on Israel to halt its bloody offensive that has been described as a war crime and genocide.

A Hamas official told The Jerusalem Post that the reason why security installations in the Gaza Strip had not been evacuated before the attack was because the Egyptians had assured his movement that there would be no Israeli attack in the coming days.

"Only hours before the attack, the Egyptians told our representatives that they were under the impression that Israel would not launch an operation," the Hamas official said. "We believe the Egyptians deliberately deceived us because they had given Israel a green light to attack."

Israeli Foreign Minister Tsibi Livni announced Israel’s will to launch an offensive against Gaza from the office of Egyptian President Husni Mubarak, hours before the operation started.

The Hamas official pointed out that both President Mahmoud Abbas and the Egyptian leaders had announced shortly before the Israeli attack that they were engaged in attempts to resume "national dialogue" between Fatah and Hamas.

Taher a-Nunu, spokesman for the Hamas government, accused "third parties" of involvement in the Israeli effort to overthrow Hamas. However, he refused to name the third parties.
The Jerusalem Post quoted a top Palestinian Authority official in Ramallah as saying that the PA was prepared to assume control over the Gaza Strip if Israel succeeds in overthrowing the Hamas government. However, he denied the PA had urged Israel to launch a massive attack to overthrow the Hamas government.

Stances of UN, US, AL, Arab Leaders…A Déjà Vu?

Stances of UN, US, AL, Arab Leaders…A Déjà Vu?
Mohamad Shmaysani Readers Number : 84

28/12/2008 …For the Palestinians being massacred in the Gaza Strip, this is a déjà vu, especially that Arab leaders are in a hurry to hold a summit to address the Israeli attack…next Friday.

The UN Security Council on Sunday called in a non-binding statement, that neither mentioned Israel nor Hamas, for an immediate end to all “military activities” in the Gaza Strip and urged the parties to address the humanitarian crisis in the territory.
"No country would allow continuous rocketing of its civilian population without taking the necessary actions to stop it. Israel expects the understanding and support of the international community to its actions," Israeli Ambassador Gabriela Shalev protested in a letter to the current president of the Security Council, Croatian Ambassador Neven Jurica.
The United States agreed.
"We strongly condemn the repeated rocket and mortar attacks against Israel," US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.
Washington blesses the offensive but calls on Israel to avoid civilians, something the Zionist entity has failed to do since its creation on the corpses of Palestinians in 1948.

The Arab League is meanwhile mulling an “urgent meeting” to address the attack on Gaza, but the “League” is apparently not in a hurry. According to Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, a meeting of AL Foreign Ministers is set to be held in Cairo Wednesday. The permanent representatives in the Arab League agreed to hold an “urgent” Arab summit in Doha next Friday. Sources told Al-Manar that the Egyptian representative expressed reservation with regards to the summit. Hussam Zaki, the spokesman of Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said that FM Ahmed Abul Gheit has been working with his Arab counterparts to hold an Arab FMs meeting during which discussions will take place into an urgent Arab summit and whether there is need for such summit or not!

And of course, the official stance in the Arab world is: We feel sorry for you.

During the “truce” between Israel and Hamas, the Zionist entity made hundreds of violations and killed well over 200 Palestinians. Dozens of rockets were fired at occupied territories in response.
Everytime the Israeli media reports rocket fire on settlements it further says that “the rockets caused little damage and no casualties.”
After Israel gained international and, unfortunately, Arab support for its bloody offensive, Foreign Minister chose Egypt to announce the beginning of "Operation Cast Lead" which killed 270 Palestinians in 24 hours.
It was until the offensive on Gaza began that an Israeli settler was killed in a Palestinian rocket attack. The Palestinians have no recourse but to defend themselves, and the makeshift rockets they fire are nothing compared to the world's most advanced warplanes and munitions, which the Israel army is using against them.

Anyone can see that the Israeli alleged response to rocket fire is disproportionate.

When the Aljazeera anchor was interviewing the Israel Army spokesman Saturday, she asked him: Haven’t you learnt yet that using force to stop rocket fire or achieve military gains is futile?
His response was: We’re acting in self-defense!
For self-defense, Defense Minister Ehud Barak has vowed Israel will expand its massive military offensive against Gaza.

But what goes in parallel?
Elections.
Israeli politicians have been under attack by the Israeli public for failing to deal with what they call “Hamastan”. Some Arab countries also share the Israeli public their opinion. The stunning victory of the internationally monitored democratic elections that led to Hamas’ control of Gaza was not pleasant news to Israel, the US, and many Arab leaders taking refuge under the so called umbrella of moderation. The obvious decision was first: to take Hamas down politically through boycott, discredit and putting behind bars its MPs, ministers and senior officials. When this failed, it was decided that Hamas should be toppled by the same people that brought it to power and so the blockade and suffering of three million people began with the blessing of the international community and the some Arab leaders on top of which were Egyptian leaders who kept the Rafah crossing closed. As this move also failed, Israeli officials were under extreme pressure as elections were looming. Military action became a must as it will benefit Zionist leaders and the axis of so called Arab moderate states that have been eager to empty the region from resistance movements as was the case in Lebanon in 2006.
Polls in Israel have shown that the gap between opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu and other candidates has narrowed, after the former PM was in the lead because of his persistent calls to act militarily in Gaza.
Another possible factor that fostered Israel’s decision to launch its offensive was the near end of US President George W. Bush’s days in the White House, so Israel had to make use of Bush’s last days given the notion in Israel that President-elect Barak Obama is more disposed towards the Palestinians than Bush and therefore might not sanction a military strike when he takes office.

Hajj and Eid al-Adha

What is Hajj?

The annual pilgrimage to Makkah- the Hajj- is an obligation only for those who are physically and financially able to perform it. Nevertheless, about two million people go to Makkah each year from every corner of the globe providing a unique opportunity for those of different nations to meet one another.

Although Makkah is always filled with visitors, the annual Hajj begins in the twelfth month of the Islamic year (which is lunar, not solar, so the Hajj and Ramadan fall sometimes in summer, sometimes in winter). Pilgrims wear special clothes: simple garments which strip away distinctions of class and culture, so that all stand equal before God.

The rites of the Hajj, which are of Abrahamic origin, include circling the Ka’ba seven times, and going seven times between the mountains of Safa nd Marwa as did Hagar during her search for water. Then the pilgrims stand together on the wide plain of Arafa and join in prayers for God’s forgiveness, in what is often thought of as a preview of the Last Judgement.
In previous centuries the Hajj was an arduous undertaking. Today, however, Saudi Arabia provides millions of people with water, modern transport, and the most up-to-date health facilities.

The close of the Hajj is marked by a festival, the Eid al-Adha, which is celebrated with prayers and the exchange of gifts in Muslim communities everywhere.

What is Eid al-Adha?

At the end of the Hajj (annual pilgrimage to Mecca), Muslims throughout the world celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice). In 2008, Eid al-Adha will begin on approximately December 8th, and will last for three days.

What does Eid al-Adha commemorate?

During the Hajj, Muslims remember and commemorate the trials and triumphs of the Prophet Abraham. The Qur'an describes Abraham as follows:
"Surely Abraham was an example, obedient to Allah, by nature upright, and he was not of the polytheists. He was grateful for Our bounties. We chose him and guided him unto a right path. We gave him good in this world, and in the next he will most surely be among the righteous." (Qur'an 16:120-121)
One of Abraham's main trials was to face the command of Allah to kill his only son. Upon hearing this command, he prepared to submit to Allah's will. When he was all prepared to do it, Allah revealed to him that his "sacrifice" had already been fulfilled. He had shown that his love for his Lord superceded all others, that he would lay down his own life or the lives of those dear to him in order to submit to God.

Why do Muslims sacrifice an animal on this day?

During the celebration of Eid al-Adha, Muslims commemorate and remember Abraham's trials, by themselves slaughtering an animal such as a sheep, camel, or goat. This action is very often misunderstood by those outside the faith.
Allah has given us power over animals and allowed us to eat meat, but only if we pronounce His name at the solemn act of taking life. Muslims slaughter animals in the same way throughout the year. By saying the name of Allah at the time of slaughter, we are reminded that life is sacred.

The meat from the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is mostly given away to others. One-third is eaten by immediate family and relatives, one-third is given away to friends, and one-third is donated to the poor. The act symbolizes our willingness to give up things that are of benefit to us or close to our hearts, in order to follow Allah's commands. It also symbolizes our willingness to give up some of our own bounties, in order to strengthen ties of friendship and help those who are in need. We recognize that all blessings come from Allah, and we should open our hearts and share with others.

It is very important to understand that the sacrifice itself, as practiced by Muslims, has nothing to do with atoning for our sins or using the blood to wash ourselves from sin. This is a misunderstanding by those of previous generations: "It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him." (Qur'an 22:37)

The symbolism is in the attitude - a willingness to make sacrifices in our lives in order to stay on the Straight Path. Each of us makes small sacrifices, giving up things that are fun or important to us. A true Muslim, one who submits his or herself completely to the Lord, is willing to follow Allah's commands completely and obediently. It is this strength of heart, purity in faith, and willing obedience that our Lord desires from us.

What else do Muslims do to celebrate the holiday?

On the first morning of Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world attend morning prayers at their local mosques. Prayers are followed by visits with family and friends, and the exchange of greetings and gifts. At some point, members of the family will visit a local farm or otherwise will make arrangements for the slaughter of an animal. The meat is distributed during the days of the holiday or shortly thereafter.
