05/11/2008 Just like the whole world, Lebanon hailed on Wednesday the election of Barack Obama as US President, hoping the world could witness stability and peace during his period of rule.

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said that the American people were trying to move beyond past actions by electing Barack Obama as President. "The new president must now make the right decisions, and should start off by resolving the Middle East crisis and removing the injustice the people of the region have suffered, especially the Palestinians," Berri pointed out.

Prime Minister Fouad Saniora just said that the results of the US presidential elections were good, answering reporters' questions at the Baabda Presidential Palace before the second round of the Lebanese national dialogue started.

Hezbollah international relations official Nawwaf Mussawi said that the new American administration would seek potential compromises with the forces that oppose the US policy. "Change in the American policy following the elections is definite," Mussawi said, recalling that the previous policy had failed. "Any coming president should reconsider the fruitless policies that were adopted and perceive that the administration does not depend on military," the Hezbollah official noted, predicting at the same time that the major essential US constants toward the region would not really change.

For his part, Future Movement MP Saad Hariri congratulated Obama on the "historic achievement of the American people manifested in the election." In a letter he sent to Obama, Hariri expressed hope in his letter that the "people who look forward to peace and security will find in you a partner to help them achieve their dreams in a life free from poverty and fear."

Minister of State Jean Ogassapian said that US President-elect Barack Obama’s commitment, during his campaign, to Lebanese who struggled for democracy reflected a continuation of the principles of President Georges W. Bush. These principles, Ogasapian said, led him to support the Cedar revolution, and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions.

Meanwhile, the most remarkable statement was, no doubt, Geagea's "smart" declaration, as usual, over the issue. Geagea told reporters at the Baabda Presidential Palace prior to the start of the second round of the Lebanese national dialogue that the "March 8 candidate won in the United States!"
