PSP & Israel, a Life-time Relationship

13/05/2008 Once again, questions have been raised about Israel's position in the body of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP), headed by MP Walid Jumblatt. These questions are justified given the course of events and facts.

"Jumblatt, the lion, accuses Hezbollah of being an Iranian entity that we should be cautious of; Jumblatt is confronting Hezbollah with us, especially that he's been showing readiness to fight the party," Israeli expert in Arab affairs Tsefika Yehezkaly, said last week.

That's it: Jumblatt is the Lion in Israeli eyes. Perhaps time has come for the Israelis to acknowledge Jumblatt and praise him for the favors he made to Israel. Jumblatt's role with the Israelis has even caused divisions within his party giving birth to the PSP correctional movement.

The head of the correctional movement Raed Al-Sayegh explained that this movement was a spontaneous reaction to the changes within the PSP, particularly when Jumblatt sough to take it from one side to another. " Jumblatt was taking the PSP from the Arab resistant milieu rendering it an anti-resistance party that executes (US Secretary of State) Condoleezza Rice's instructions.

US and French intelligence services have revealed that they had cooperated with Jumblatt on many matters. The PSP leader was also reported to have been meeting Israeli leaders since 1982. Apart from Shimon Peres whom Jumblatt met during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, the PSP chief met Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, former deputy chief of staff Moshe Kaplinsky and Knesset Member Colette Avital.
Moreover, Jumblatt has been implicated in the assassination case of Lebanese journalist Samir Kassir who was killed using a bomb similar to the one that killed former Lebanese Communist Party leader George Hawi, less than a month later.

This is Jumblatt. But what about some of his party members?
PSP Telecommunications Minister Marwan Hmade's best achievements were accomplished during the July 2006 war against Lebanon. Hmade volunteered to help the Israelis in their bid to crush the resistance and commit massacres against unarmed civilians. Prominent Israeli journalist Nasim Ayaloni said he had evidence to Marwan Hmede's involvement in the Imam Hassan Complex massacre in Beirut's southern suburb, where Sayyed Nasrallah was thought to be staying. Ayaloni said he would testify against Hmede to any investigative panel if necessary.
This is not strange. When he was still an ally of the resistance, Jumblatt used to ban Hmede from accompanying him to visit Sayyed Nasrallah. The one reason Jumblatt used to give was: I don't trust Marwan. He's a US agent and even an international agent."

PSP well informed sources confirmed that Democratic Gathering MP Wael Abu Faour had met, three times, with Israeli Mossad officials in Jordan in 2004. His colleague MP Akram Chehayeb occupies a higher rank in the eyes of the Israeli. They managed to build a friendship relation, so close to the degree that one proud Israeli officer sent Chehayeb his best wishes in 1986 in circumstances the PSP MP must remember well.

Going down in ranks, we arrive to Mahmoud Rafea. He is the notorious 'Mossad agent' detained by Lebanese authorities and charged with the assassination of Hezbollah cadres and the Majzoub brothers from the Islamic Jihad in Sidon.
