11/05/2008 Fierce clashes broke out on Sunday in mainly Druze areas southeast of the Lebanese capital between Walid Jumblatt’s Progressive Socialist Party Militiamen and supporters of the Lebanese national opposition.

Heavy machine-gun fire and loud explosions echoed through several villages in the district of Aley, including Aaytat and Baysur. Intense fighting was also reported in Shwayfat. Earlier, clashes spots in Mount Lebanon were extended to many areas in the region.

Al Manar correspondent said that number of PSP militiamen surrendered to the opposition at the ends of Kayfoun town.

Meanwhile, Jumblatt urged his rival, head of the Democratic Party Talal Arslan, to mediate a deployment of the army in the mountain asking his militiamen to stop fighting and lay down their weapons in order to protect what he called “the civic peace”.

In response, Arslan held a conference calling on PSP militiamen in Mount Lebanon to lay down their weapons and offices to the Lebanese army. Arslan said that he agreed with the opposition figures that he is delegated to handle security issues only with Jumblatt’s militias adding that he would call General Michel Sleiman for more coordination.

Arslan stressed that Mount Lebanon would never turn against the resistance but it will always support it.
