30/06/2008 The regional and international intersection that made the election of a Lebanese president possible is likely to subside, a Western diplomatic report revealed, according to the German News Agency. The report noted that the US retreat in Lebanon was not strategic but tactic.

It stressed that Saudi Arabia linked any communication with Syria to a series of conditions, including handing over the files of "terrorists and Saudi born Al-Qaeda operatives" and extradite them to Saudi Arabia to be tries according to Saudi rules. Another condition is that Syria considers the Saudi standpoint regarding Muslim Sunnis in Lebanon and the need to deal with them as friends not enemies. Also among the conditions, according to the German News Agency, is that Syria reconsiders its relations with Iran and stands behind the "Arab row in confronting the Iranian-Shiite expansion."

The report also noted that, on the other hand, Syria is looking forward for a comprehensive settlement of a series of outstanding issues between the two countries, on top of which is that the Saudi Kingdom stops backing anti-Syrian regime Sunnis, like former Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam who's residing in Paris under French protection and Saudi financial support.

The report said that Syria had earlier requested Saudi Arabia to stop interfering in internal Syrian affairs, by extraditing Khaddam to Syria for trial, knowing that Damascus is aware that Khaddam has been given personal guarantee from Saudi King Abdallah as long as the former VP recovers in Riyadh hospitals.

The report concluded that the Lebanese crisis will not find its way to solution if the Syrian-Saudi intersection was not restored and unless the international community decided to drag Lebanon out of international disputes.
