16/07/2008 While Lebanon, unified, was celebrating Wednesday another victory against the Israeli enemy, the national-unity cabinet held its first meeting at the Baabda presidential palace.

The meeting came after a protocol picture was taken for the complete government alongside President Michel Suleiman and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

Following the meeting that lasted only half an hour, Mitri announced that a committee comprising ministers Elias Skaff (Agriculture), Mohamad Shateh (Finance), Youssef Taqla (State ministry), Gebran Bassil (Telecommunications), Mohamad Fneish (Work), Wael Abu Faour (State ministry), Fawzi Salloukh (Foreign Affairs), Nassib Lahoud (State ministry) and Tareq Mitri (Information) has been set up to draft the policy statement. The committee agreed to meet on Thursday to discuss the issue.

Mitri said President Suleiman briefed the cabinet on the Mediterranean summit, his talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and Foreign Minister Walid Muallem's visit to Beirut "which is expected to take place soon."

"We have to abide by the government's decisions no matter what our political affiliations are", Mitri quoted the president as saying, adding that the latter called the ministers to assume the responsibility of improving the functioning of state institutions."
