03/07/2008 The Higher Shiite Islamic Council strongly denounced the UK’s decision on Tuesday to add Hezbollah to its list of terrorist organizations, describing the move as a "flagrant aggression against the Lebanese people's right to resist Israeli occupation, which represents the official terrorism long sponsored and supported by Britain."

In a statement it issued after a meeting headed by Sheikh Abdel Amir Qabalan, the council called on the UK and the West to end "these hostile attitudes" and instead work with Muslims to foster a civilized attitude between peoples of all religions, especially between Muslims and Christians.

Qabalan hailed the swap deal reached between Hezbollah and Israel, adding that the council felt that "extracting the approval of the Israeli enemy to return Lebanese detainees and the bodies of Lebanese and Arab martyrs" was a new victory for Lebanon's resistance.

The agreement, which Israel approved on Sunday and Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah officially agreed to on Tuesday, was "a culmination of the historic victory of the July War, which proves once again the need for the Resistance to preserve the nation and its sovereignty, and the pride and dignity of its citizens," the council said.

Qabalan called on all political forces to complete the implementation of the Doha Agreement through the formation of a national unity government and the adoption of an electoral law, which he deemed necessary for dealing with the economic crisis that citizens were suffering.

The Council also urged the Lebanese to "seize this opportunity" and fortify unity and harmony among one another.
