15/07/2008 The Prime Minister’s Information Office on Tuesday slammed Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s statement that UN Security Council Resolution 1701 was a "failure" as a clear condemnation for Israel.

"The exchange of prisoners had been mediated by the UN and in accordance with resolution 1701 in terms of the need to find a solution to the issue of Lebanese detainees in the enemy’s prisons and the Israeli soldiers captured during the July War," the information office said in a statement.

"Israel waged a devastating war in Lebanon in the summer of 2006 under the pretext of retrieving its two captured soldiers, and it did not find a way to do so. This is evidence that the logic of force and violence will not lead to results, while the logic of demanding legitimate rights, taken by the Lebanese government and people, wins at the end," the statement added.

The Lebanese government intended to implement the other items of resolution 1701 in full, the statement added, calling on the international community to pressurize Israel to send Lebanon all maps of cluster bombs it used in shelling the county during the July 2006 war, to stop its overland, sea and air violations and to pull out of the remaining occupied territories, including Shebaa Farms.

PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS TO CLOSE WEDNESDAY
Meanwhile, the Lebanese government announced Tuesday that all public and private institutions, municipalities, schools and universities are to close on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in observance of the liberation of Lebanese detainees from Israeli prisons and the return of Lebanese martyrs' bodies to Lebanese territories.
