14/07/2008 UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed hope that the international tribunal to try suspects in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri would soon be launched.
"We hope the tribunal would begin as soon as possible," Ban said after meeting President Michel Suleiman on the sidelines of the Mediterranean summit in Paris on Sunday. He noted that no trial date has yet been set in the Hariri case, stressing the need to finalize the Court's funding for the first two years.

Ban also told reporters that he was optimistic about the situation in Lebanon following the election of Suleiman and the formation of a national unity government.

The UN chief promised to intensify his efforts to reach a solution for the Shebaa Farms issue.

For his part, Suleiman said he had discussed with Ban the implementation of Resolution 1701, namely the efforts being made to resolve the occupied Shebaa Farms issue. "I am positive that the process by which the Shebaa Farms will be returned to Lebanese sovereignty has already kicked off," Suleiman said.

The Lebanese president thanked Ban for all his efforts to help Lebanon.
"As we draw closer to the expected swap between Lebanon and Israel, I would like to thank the UN for its efforts to facilitate such a swap as well as its past efforts to end the July war of 2006," Suleiman said.
