09/07/2008 Lebanese President Michel Suleiman called his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, on the phone to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries.

Suleiman also expressed thanks to Assad over the Syrian cabinet’s decision to exempt Lebanese citizens from paying a departure tax when crossing the Syrian border into Lebanon. The presidents also discussed the issue of the movement of trucks across the Syrian-Lebanese border.

They also agreed to meet in Paris to continue discussing issues that concern the Lebanese and Syrian sides, including the issue of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

SULEIMAN TO WORK FOR "NORMAL" RELATIONS WITH SYRIA
Earlier, President Michel Suleiman pledged to work for "normal" relations with Syria within the "framework of joint respect for the sovereignty and borders of each state."

Suleiman, in an interview with France's Magazine L'Express, rejected the United Kingdom's decision to label “Hezbollah’s armed wing” as "terrorist," saying that "whoever defends his land and liberates it from occupation cannot be termed terrorist." "I cannot accept this in any case."
In answering a question about the indirect negotiations between Syria and Israel, Suleiman said that "it is Syria's right to choose the type of negotiations it wants." "If Syria achieved positive results in its indirect negotiations with Israel, this would reflect positively on the Arab-Israeli conflict," he added.
