10/07/2008 Lebanese President Michel Suleiman stressed importance Thursday on normalizing relations between Lebanon and Syria, adding that there is no other way but that.

"We are compelled to agreement, because Israel seeks to tear Arab countries apart, and has succeeded in spreading the accusation that Arabs and Muslims are terrorists," Suleiman said in a meeting with a delegation of the Arab Lawyers’ Union.

The Lebanese President considered that the Resistance is something to be proud of, noting that it's a strong part of the country. "Resistance is the pride of Lebanon," Suleiman stressed. He also said that Lebanon had a long way to go in strengthening internal unity.

Suleiman also stressed that general freedom was directly associated with pluralism, which he said characterized Arab nations. "We know the limits of our freedom, because freedom means not infringing on others or insulting their social, national, political, religious and sectarian beliefs," he added.

In a later meeting on Thursday with the representatives of the General Labor Union, President Sleiman said that workers were "the main pillars of Lebanon" and underlined the need to pay more attention to their needs and demands.

Suleiman said he believed that the solution to the economic crisis was not only to increase salaries, but also to stimulate the national economic cycle. Political understanding would have positive repercussions on public life, he added.

Suleiman also underlined the need to unify unions and trade unions in accordance with the methods of democracy, "because fragmentation does not serve the issues and needs of workers."
